Gerrard blow for England

Steven Gerrard will miss England's two World Cup qualifiers next month - but should be fit for Liverpool's Champions League group stage opener.

That is the view of Reds boss Rafael Benitez in revealing the midfielder faces a groin operation having played through pain in games this season.

Benitez said: "He could be out for 10 to 15 days. It is not serious but we need to do it (the surgery) now."

Rafa: Kuyt is tremendous

Boss Rafael Benitez hailed his European lucky charm, striker Dirk Kuyt, as Liverpool scrambled their way into the Champions League group stages.

Dutchman Kuyt grabbed the winner just two minutes from the end of extra time as the Reds pipped Standard Liege.

Benitez said: "I was delighted with Dirk Kuyt. His goal was a reward for all the effort he puts in for us. He is amazing. His work is tremendous."

Dirk Kuyt pounced at the far post with two minutes of extra time remaining as a disappointing Liverpool survived a huge scare against Standard Liege.

Ryan Babel's cross should have been cleared but Dutchman Kuyt poked home to secure Liverpool's passage to the group stage of the Champions League (118).

Nabil El Zhar was denied a penalty late on but Liege had the best chances, Pepe Reina twice saving well early on.
